Thinking Type 7 is the last one of the “thinkers” and thus the last one whose childhood distress lied in lacking security. They didn’t feel held enough by their caregivers, especially when they were going through emotionally difficult times as a child – maybe because their parents were emotionally unstable and therefore only could deal with their child when it was in a good mood. In any case, the child experienced a loss of support as soon as they were in a bad mood, and even more when they felt hurt by something. Like this, the child developed the self perception of being “unbearable” when in pain. A feeling of happiness on the other hand meant security and thus the solution to their childhood distress.

In order to protect itself, their psyche found a way of self-supplying this feeling of happiness. With the primary short circuit Acting – Thinking (AT) he took control of the threatened area of security: He controlled his thinking and and thus self-supplied the feelings of happiness through preplanning. This self stimulation was supported by his secondary short circuits, the distancing from responsibility (TA) and the empowerment of feeling (FF).

catch-me posterAs soon as this pattern exceeds its function of childhood self-protection and a person gets triggered back into it as an adult, there is storm warning. And if a person is permanently trapped in it, it is considered a personality disorder. In the following, Leonadro DiCaprio playing Frank Abagnale in “Catch Me If You Can” (2002) will serve as an example of a thinking type 7 with storm warning.

List 7 AT

Thinking type 7 manipulates the thinking. In this state, he compulsively controls his thoughts and he does it in a way that creates a feeling of happiness – and thus security:

– Planning: His thoughts are directed at compiling an exiting schedule full of happiness stimulating highlights. This makes unhealthy 7 a restless organizer for colorful, extraordinary group activities, which he simultaneously runs and “enjoys”.

– Situational: He compulsively sets his focus to things that bring him instant gratification: bright, loud, beautiful, exiting and new things. Thereby, it becomes apparent that his attention serves this purpose in an exclusive way: concentrating on constant and trivial things out of necessity is not only hard but very stressful to him. The reason for this is that he feels like his security is in jeopardy (keyword: ADD).

-Inspiration: In order to maintain a constant flow of new enjoyable experiences, he’s always on the prowl for inspiration and scans his environment for for sources of it.

Because a type 7 in storm state depends on stimulation with happy thoughts, he not only manipulates his own thoughts but also acts as a charming thought-policeman towards others. Happiness-stimulating thoughts are good, are being thought and encouraged in others – with missionary zeal. On the other hand, thoughts concerning the more “boring”, earnest or even darker aspects of life are attacked instantly. Unhealthy type 7 uses them to prove his ability to change them into something “positive”.

The bandwidth of impacts on others thereby ranges from somewhat exhausting encounters, in which one gets coached unasked with attitude correcting success-thoughts, over the many rather harmless books on “positive thinking” to more serious situations where sick sevens manage to gather large crowds of followers by indoctrinating them with a unique but short-sighted success ideology.

List 7 TA

Thinking type 7 in storm state distances himself from the consequences of his actions, from responsibility. Especially, this comes to light in committed relationships, where it comes down to be there for each other in good times as in bad. As this is perceived as very stressful by the unhealthy seven, they take flight as soon as the relationship seems to demand for commitment. The following wedding scene depicts in an exaggerated way, what happens as a literal flight in romantic relationships and as a flight into work – oftentimes resulting in workaholism.

Type 7 amplifies feelings of happiness and identifies with them. Therefore, he approaches others in an exceptionally charming and endearing way. In his unhealthy state, this is done only to the degree in which it serves his hedonism. Therefore his accented emotionality reveals to be of strikingly egoistic character in the long run.

The interpersonal motto of an unhealthy seven: flirting yes, because it means thrilling instant gratification; commitment no, because the needs of another person interfere with his sophisticated excitement schedule.

This is how a feeling type 7 with storm warning functions.

Why is this dangerous to families?
Because children depend on parents who are there for them. A person who functions like this restlessly jumps from event to event, and if they happen to be there physically, their thoughts are already with the next spectacle instead of with the life of their children. These kids feel their impassive flight from responsibility and get manipulated to support this parent’s excitement addiction as means to this end.

Why is this unsatisfactory in relationships?
For the same reasons. Although as an adult, one is not as dependent on the partner as a child is but the mutual happiness relies on the functionality of both. How can one relate to someone who’s never really there? To someone who checks out as soon commitment is required? Someone whose emotionality is all about his own instant self gratification at the bottom line? It is possible. But it’s unsatisfactory.

As with the other thinking types, the childhood distress for the “skeptic” was a lack of safety. The environment of the child was full of uncertainty. Their caregivers oftentimes acted in frighteningly unpredictable ways and the infant could not depend on them. Promises were broken, knowledge withheld and their perceptions unvalidated. On the factual level there was no stability and his arguments were rejected and twisted by “the powerful ones” – logic was no safe place. Thus, the development of their own identity was in threatened. Thinking type 6 is the one whose psyche dealt with this problem by suppressing this level – he distanced himself from thinking (TT). The problem of endangered identity was solved, but with a side effect: the lost sense of identity. To compensate this lack of self-confidence, the two other short circuits came to aid: The empowerment of acting (FA) and the control over feelings (AF). THE-SOCIAL-NETWORK-Vertical-PosterAs soon as this pattern exceeds its function of childhood self-protection and a person gets triggered back into it as an adult, there is storm warning. And if a person is permanently trapped in it, it is considered a personality disorder. In the following, Jesse Eisenberg playing Mark Zuckerberg in “The Social Network” (2010) will serve as an example of a thinking type 6 with storm warning.

With his primary short circuit, thinking Type 6 distances himself from thinking (TT). This may seem paradoxical as he’s the one with the most “brainy” appearance of all. But just like feeling type 3 who because of his distance towards his inner feelings powerfully emphasizes on the external level of feeling as a way to compensate the inner loss, thinking type 6 does not speak about his inner personal thoughts but about “sampled” external ones: He talks about things and information, quotes social critics and gets lost in narratives and lamentations about important turning points in world history.

But when it comes to his own history, it’s not like that. In conversation with him it seems as if one would speak to a person without a past. It’s this area – the one of his identity – from which he distances himself. The loss of his sense of identity is compensated with an extraordinarily active protective layer which is composed of thousands of complex external thoughts. Thus, thinking type 6 in storm state becomes intangible and core-less.

It’s not only his inner Logic from which he distances himself but also from potentially personal thoughts that are expressed towards him. By default he’s doubtful about the sincerity of his interlocutors. At times this is expressed as a direct questioning of motives, at other times as an arrogant “whatever”-attitude in which he doesn’t listen to what is said.

Thinking Type 6 is the one with the strongest gender differences. The reason for this lies in the side-effect of identity-loss in his primary short circuit. This lost identity now is re-assembled differently in men and women: men tend to compensate it more via the area of action – competition, work, achievements; women via the area of emotions – sexual attractiveness, “collecting” prospects, social status.

Thus, of the following short circuits, the first one is more dominant in men (FA), the second in women (AF).

“Threatened identity? i don’t care. And anyway, we’ll see in the future” said the psyche of the child and threw themselves into acting. And so does the adult 6 in storm state: He amplifies his actions and own will, his assertiveness and identifies with his accomplishments. He enforces the competitive spirit to the extent necessary to restore the lost feeling of self-confidence.

Thinking type 6 in storm state treats relationships and feelings like things. He compulsively needs to establish control over them which he exercises in a sometimes unscrupulous manner. He actively adapts his relations to other people to his addiction for self-confidence and uses his friends as means to this end.

This is how a thinking type 6 with storm warning functions.

Why is this dangerous to families?
Because children depend on parents who are there for them. A person who functions like this shows no identity and thus denies their children the needed orientation. Instead, they withdraw into an elitist expert-world and views them as business cards whose job is it to serve their self-confidence by representing their intellectual greatness.

Why is this unsatisfactory in relationships?
For the same reasons. Although as an adult, one is not as dependent on the partner as a child is but the mutual happiness relies on the functionality of both. How can one relate to someone who keeps his identity out of the relationship and distrusts everyone? To someone who depends on maintaining his sense of self-confidence by constantly competing with you intellectually? Someone who’s not able to relax unless he controls the feelings in a relationship and treats people as tools? It is possible. But it’s unsatisfactory.

Feeling type 4 is the third one who’s childhood distress was emotional coldness. But unlike the others, their solution was to actively take control of the realm of feeling (AF). They dominated their emotions. To keep this self-supply with emotional warmth in place, their two secondary short circuits came into play: the enforcement of their own will (FA) and the distancing from facts and objectivity (TT). Whenever needed, the psyche of the little child shut down in this manner and thus survived.

And if the person is permanently trapped in it, it is considered a personality disorder. As an example of a feeling type 3 with storm warning, we’ll take a look at the character Clementine in “Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind” (2004), brilliantly played by Kate Winslet.

List 4 AF

With his A- short circuit, feeling type 4 in storm state is one of the “control addicted self supporters”. These are the ones who establish domination over the given function in order to supply themselves with it. With feeling type 4 it’s the realm of emotions – it’s about the self-supply with warmth. The person gives themselves the favorable “being seen” which they lacked in childhood.

In doing so, they not only mirror themselves but also pushes others into being mirrors to. magical mirrors, which only mirror pleasant things at all times. Dependent on this constant positive feedback they compulsively control how others see them. They have to be remarkably unique and everyone around them has to bee charmed and seduced into reacting positively to this uniqueness. Sometimes this is done passive and indirectly, at other times through emotional power-play, focused at quickly deepening the felt connection of the “mirror”.

If they succeed, the addiction is satisfied and except for a little boredom, everything’s fine. But what if there is no feedback? Or even a negative one? At this point, the two other short circuits instantly come to the rescue.

List 4 FA

The short circuit Feeling – Acting causes the boost of conflict. The identification with their own will and it’s enforcement. And because this short circuit serves the emotional self supply, it’s expressed in form of provocations and emotional drama. In fights that are focused on achieving a positively felt self-image as their end game. Therefore, feeling type 4 becomes a true drama queen when in stormy. Because this dominant demeanor seems to be coming out of nowhere, it’s often surprising and irritating to the people around them.

The triggering reason for it is insufficient positive mirroring. The logic behind it: “if you don’t want to be my magic mirror, i will emotionally push you into being wrong and supply myself with the good feeling in relation to you which i depend on”.

TT

List 4 TT

The second short circuit which activates in case of lacking mirroring is Thinking – Thinking. The distancing from reality, logic and coherence. At this level, there are no consistent actions or statements. Also this short circuit serves the self-supply with emotional warmth and a positive self-image and expresses as a retreat into fantasy. A fantasy, in which the self-image feels good and only good. Observed from the outside, this retreat sometimes looks exaggeratedly childlike and cheerful, sometimes very melancholic:

Distancing from thinking has a side effect – loss of the sense of identity, the feeling for “i-am-me and you-are-you”. These boundaries collapse. This side effect leads to depressive episodes, in which the person feels like they are falling apart. Also now, there has to be someone who cures this negative feeling by his mirroring from the outside. Someone who takes the pieces of the broken self-image and puzzles them together again. Flawlessly.

This is how a feeling type 4 with storm warning functions.

Why is this dangerous to families?
Because children depend on parents who are there for them. People who function like this, may be very emotionally present, but not for their children. Instead, they do anything to transform them into disappearing, dishonest people who only “mirror” good things. And because they live in ever-changing, self-idealizing dream worlds, they fail at supplying the stability which the child needs for its healthy development.

Why is this unsatisfactory in relationships?
For the same reasons. Although as an adult, one is not as dependent on the partner as a child is but the mutual happiness relies on the functionality of both. How can one relate to someone who’s emotionality is only oriented on receiving constant idealizing attention? To someone who gets shockingly aggressive whenever there’s a stop in this flow? Someone who spends most of his time with you in inaccessible dreamworlds? It is possible. But it’s unsatisfactory.

Feeling type 3’s internal solution to this problem was to distance himself from his feelings (TF). With this primary short circuit, a lot was lost: his sense of self. To compensate this loss, the two secondary short circuits did their part: the identification with thinking (FT) and aggressive dominance over the action realm (AA).

As an example of a feeling type 3 with storm warning, let’s have a look at the character Carolyn Burnham in “American Beauty” (1999), played by Annette Bening.

Feeling type 3 in storm state seems paradox. On one side, he expresses himself in a remarkably emotional way. On the other hand, he is emotionally unavailable. He lacks the capacity to tune into deep feelings, be it their own or those of others. In his presence, you don’t feel seen and can’t see him. That’s because of his primary short circuit (TF) – because hi distances himself from feeling.

All you can see is a carricature-like mask that projects success. As long as you resonate with this mask and pretend not recognizing it, all is well. But as soon as you dare to expect humanity, you are in trouble.

In the following scene, Carolyn “comforts” her daughter Jane who has just withdrawn from a parental fight. But as Jane refuses to play along with the you-are-a-fantastic-mother script,  the put-on “empathy” ends and daughter now has to comfort mom.

This self protection by distancing from the feelings comes with a high price: the sense of self. To compensate this loss, type 3 uses the two other functions, thinking and acting to acquire an artificial feeling of success. This emotional self-deceit becomes an addiction to which the other two short circuits cater.

Carolyn loves the thinking, amplifies and identifies herself with it. And because this short circuit serves to create a feeling of success, it is composed of thousands of groundbreaking success-thoughts, steps to certain triumph, which she compulsively tries to substantiate to herself and those around her. Type 3 in storm state loves success-mantras.

The second short circuit that serves to satisfy Carolyn’s addiction: she controls the level of action. Her own actions and those of others are things that have to be adapted to the goal – maximal felt success – at all times.

This is how a feeling type 3 with storm warning functions.

Why is this dangerous to families?
Because children depend on parents who are there. People who function like this, are emotionally dissociated from their children. Instead of caring for their feelings and inner worlds, They demand unaccomplisheably high standards and endanger the development of the child’s healthy autonomy by their control-addiction.

Why is this unsatisfactory in relationships?
For the same reasons. Although as an adult, one is not as dependent on the partner as a child is but the mutual happiness relies on the functionality of both. How can one relate to someone who’s emotional world is locked? To someone who is addicted to permanently lecturing others on absurd recipes to success and controlling their behavior? It is possible. But it’s unsatisfactory.

The childhood distress of a feeling type 2 was coldness. The supply of emotional warmth was not secured. The childhood problem was on the emotional level. Because he was not able to solve this problem by communicating with his parents “outside” of himself, he had to deal with it internally. And he had three possibilities: Loving the own feeling (FF), to distance himself from his own feelings (TF) or to control and dominate, to actively alter his feelings (AF). Feeling type 2 is the one who solved it in the first way.

He “loved” the feelings, amplified them, short circuited the feeling energy with itself. The other psychological functions, thinking and acting connected with each other – AT: he controlled the thinking  and – TA: distanced himself from his actions. Whenever necessary, he shut down in this manner and thus secured his survival.

As soon as this pattern exceeds its function of self-protection in childhood and a person gets triggered back into it as an adult, there is storm warning. And if the person is permanently trapped in it, it is considered a personality disorder. As an example of a feeling type 2 with storm warning, let’s take a look at the main character in “Patch Adams” (1998), played by Robin Williams.

Hunter “Patch” Adams is focused on the emotional world, identifies with his role as the one who is tuned to the feelings of the other person, brings them out, amplifies them, appreciates them and therefore receives appreciation. Whenever he does this, his own problems fade away. He distracts himself from his own and the people at the mental hospital from their own illnesses. As long as he can be this emotional patch, he does not feel the reason for his own stay at the hospital – his suicidality. It’s his drug. If he gets it, he gets a manic, self-aggrandising pride-rush. if he lacks it, he gets depressed. In order to get it, he needs sick and needy people, because without them, there’s no need for a patch.

AT

List 2 AT

The thinking, the factual level gets flexibly adapted to his addiction to emotional appreciation. in the following scene, Patch is at the university and does his study of medicine which took the place of his own psychotherapy.

Patch lectures his fellow student: “The point is: if you wanna become a doctor, you have to learn to treat the patient as well as the disease, that’s why we have to dive into people – wade into the sea of humanity, Truman.”. Here, he just humbly redefines the purpose of clinical medicine. And replaces it’s objective with one that enables him to get his “kick” as a “doctor”. In the movie he makes many similar statements. To make the point about the flexible factual level (colloquially: bullshitting), let’s take a quick look at this one:

Doctors treat diseases. That’s their job. If they go beyond that, they cross personal boundaries. If someone wants to be “treated” as a person, he visits a psychotherapist. amongst other things because he knows, that a psychotherapist has the needed competence and knows well about intimate boundaries in a therapeutical context. What patch does, is neither treating diseases nor treating “people”. He temporarily distracts them by connecting with them and make them laugh. The ability to emotionally vibe with a person is a valuable one. And is very important on the level of intimate friendships. But that’s something different than the corner stone of clinical medicine.

Patch blends these levels. Because he is addicted to distract himself from his own problems. And therefore needs a socially acceptable reason for his behavior.

Not only when justifying his actions does he make use of a freely adaptable thinking. It also serves in the acquisition of his “drug”. It’s emotional opportunism: Inner values, for which he seems to stand as a person, are changed in the blink of an eye and adapted to the environment. These values can be anything. In this case, the emulated value is “eating cow”.

Patch distances himself from his actions, denies responsibility. In the following scene, patch is confronted by his fellow student who now works for him in a non-approved hospital. He disagrees with Patch’s behavior of just leaving the patients after an employee, who also was Patch’s girlfriend was killed by a mentally ill patient as she visited him in his house.

Events, that were in Patch’s responsibility, are projected onto the evil nature of people and “god’s creation”. instead of taking responsibility, reconsider the concept and caring for his patients, he flees into the next creative “patch”-opportunity at the medical university. There, he gets applause and appreciation.

That’s how a type 2 with storm warning functions.

Why is this dangerous to families?
Because children depend on parents who are there. A person who functions like this, is not really there but restlessly on their hunt for the next “fix”. One cannot know, who they really are because their inner values change from environment to environment. Children need stability. And they certainly need parents who are able to recognize their responsibility.

Why is this unsatisfactory in relationships?
For the same reasons. Although as an adult, one is not as dependent on the partner as a child is but the mutual happiness relies on the functionality of both. How can one relate to someone who is never really “there”? To someone whose inner values you cannot get to know? Someone who doesn’t take responsibility for his actions but instead projects onto everyone and everything? It is possible. But it’s unsatisfactory.
